Eight Mines Operational by 2024, Up from Two in 2021
When President Hichilema assumed office in August 2021, only two mines were operational in Zambia, with the sector operating at below 30 percent capacity following years of mismanagement and investor flight under the previous administration. By 2024, eight mines were fully operational, with seven more in advanced stages of reopening. The revival of the mining sector has restored thousands of jobs and repositioned Zambia as one of the most stable and attractive mining and investment destinations globally, with an ambitious long-term target of three million metric tonnes of copper production annually.
