58th Independence Day Address to the Nation
📍 Lusaka, Zambia
President Hichilema delivered the Independence Day address to the nation on 24 October 2022, marking Zambia's 58th anniversary of independence from British colonial rule. The commemoration was held under the theme "Promoting Inclusiveness towards a Sustainable Social and Economic Recovery."
The guest of honour at the main commemorative event in Lusaka was Namibian President Hage Geingob. President Hichilema led dignitaries in laying wreaths at the Freedom Statue in honour of those who died during the struggle for independence, and later proceeded to the Embassy Park, the burial place of Zambia's former presidents, for a further wreath-laying ceremony.
In his address on the eve of Independence Day, President Hichilema called on citizens to safeguard the peace which was attained with great sacrifice by the freedom fighters. He emphasised that the freedom fighters laid a foundation for the country and that the peace currently being enjoyed must be preserved and protected for future generations.
The event at State House later included a national honours and awards investiture ceremony at which individuals were recognised for their contributions to Zambia's development across various sectors.
