50MW Mabumba Solar Power Plant Commissioned in Mansa, Luapula Province

President Hichilema commissioned the 50-megawatt Mabumba Solar Power Plant in Chief Mabumba area of Mansa District, Luapula Province, on 24 April 2026. The plant, developed by ZESCO at a cost of approximately US$48 million, was constructed between February and December 2025 and features over 1,500 solar panels. It is capable of fully supplying Luapula Province 27-megawatt peak electricity demand, with surplus power exported to the national grid. President Hichilema noted that the province had not seen any major power generation investment in over 60 years, having relied on a single hydropower station producing about 10 megawatts against a demand of nearly 30 megawatts. The project created over 350 jobs during construction, with priority given to local communities. The plant marked a historic milestone for Luapula Province and formed part of Zambia broader target of 10,000 megawatts of installed capacity by 2030.
