Chisamba Solar Power Plant Phase Two Commissioned, Doubling Capacity to 200MW

President Hakainde Hichilema commissioned Phase Two of the Chisamba Solar Power Plant in Chisamba District, Central Province, on 21 July 2026, adding a further 100 megawatts of renewable energy capacity to the national grid. The US$70 million expansion brings the total generation capacity of the Chisamba Solar Complex to 200 megawatts, making it the largest solar power plant in Zambia. ZESCO Managing Director Justin Loongo said more than 1,500 jobs were created during the construction phase. President Hichilema noted that the reduction in load-shedding was not a result of the election period but a direct outcome of the commissioning of several power projects, including this one. Secretary to the Cabinet Patrick Kangwa described the project as a significant milestone towards the national target of generating 10,000 megawatts of electricity by 2030. Central Province is on track to generate over 430 megawatts through solar energy by December 2026, contributing substantially to the national goal of 1,000 megawatts of solar power by year-end.
